Job Description

Our client Samarine Resort and Spa, Murang'a are looking for a hands-on, reliable, and skilled Chef/Cook to join our team in a fast-paced, casual dining environment. The ideal candidate should be well-versed in preparing popular Kenyan dishes and international cuisines. The chef should be able to manage a small kitchen team, maintain cleanliness, and serve delicious, homestyle meals that keep customers coming back. The Chef will also be responsible for menu planning, food preparation, staff supervision, cost control, and ensuring an exceptional dining experience for our customers.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Menu Planning & Food Preparation
• Prepare and cook a wide range of Kenyan meals efficiently and consistently.
• Maintain food quality, portion control, and presentation as per the restaurant’s standards.
2. Kitchen Management
• Supervise kitchen staff including cooks, stewards, and kitchen assistants and ensure smooth kitchen operations.
• Monitor food supplies, stock levels, and inform management when items need restocking.
• Ensure cleanliness of the kitchen area, utensils, and storage facilities at all times.
3. Quality Control & Hygiene
• Observe proper food handling, safety, and hygiene practices.
• Assist in receiving deliveries and checking quality of ingredients.
4. Budgeting & Cost Control
• Manage food inventory and place orders to ensure adequate stock without wastage.
• Prepare meals for customer orders as well as batch-cooked items for peak hours.
• Minimize food waste and assist in controlling kitchen costs.
5. Customer Satisfaction
• Collaborate with the front-of-house team to ensure customer feedback is addressed.
• Occasionally interact with guests, especially during special events or themed nights.
• Create special menus for events, holidays, and private functions.

Key Qualifications
Education & Experience
• Diploma or Degree in Food Production from a recognized institution or relevant kitchen experience preferred.
• Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in a similar role, preferably in a busy restaurant or hotel.
• Proven knowledge of Kenyan and continental cuisines.
Skills & Attributes
• Fast, efficient, and reliable in a high-demand kitchen.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
• Strong personal hygiene and kitchen cleanliness habits.
• Basic understanding of food safety and handling procedures.
• Passionate about food and customer satisfaction.
Working Conditions
• Flexible to work during weekends, public holidays, and evenings.
• Physically fit and capable of standing for extended periods.
• Occasionally required to lift heavy kitchen equipment or stock.
