Job Description
Department: Environmental Compliance and Enforcement
Reporting to: Principal Environmental Officer
Location: Nairobi.
Job Purpose
The Environmental Officer will support the implementation and enforcement of environmental regulations and standards in line with the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA), 1999. The officer will conduct inspections, monitor compliance, and provide technical guidance to ensure environmental protection across sectors.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct field inspections and audits of industrial, agricultural, and infrastructure sites.
Investigate complaints and incidents relating to environmental pollution or degradation.
Support the processing and review of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Audit (EA) reports.
Prepare inspection reports and recommend enforcement actions where necessary.
Engage with stakeholders including county governments, private sector, and community members.
Collect and analyze environmental data related to water, air, and waste quality.
Promote environmental awareness and participate in public education forums.
Ensure accurate record-keeping and reporting in line with departmental procedures.
Perform any other duties as may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, or a related field.
Minimum of 5 years relevant experience in environmental compliance, auditing, or related field.
Registration as an Associate or Lead EIA Expert by NEMA (an added advantage).
Knowledge of Kenyan environmental legislation, especially EMCA (1999) and its Regulations.
Proficiency in MS Office and report writing.
Strong interpersonal, communication, and analytical skills.
